Harbor Islands FAQs

Do you recommend advance reservations?

We strongly recommend that you reserve your trip, especially on weekends and holidays. Trips often sell out.

How long is the ferry ride?

About 20 minutes to Spectacle Island and 45 minutes to Georges Island. Please consult the schedule for specific times between islands and mainland piers on the inter-island shuttles serving Hingham, Grape, Bumpkin, Peddocks, Hull, Georges, and Lovells Islands.

What should I bring?

We recommend comfortable shoes or sneakers for walking. Also a light sweater or jacket in case the breeze picks up. Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must, and don’t forget your camera or binoculars.  During the off-peak seasons, food and beverage concessions are not available on the Islands.  Concessions will only be open on Georges and Spectacle Islands June 21 - September 2 and on 5/18 and Memorial Day Weekend.  So, if you will want food/beverages during your time on the Islands and it is not during these dates, we suggest you purchase items at the concessions onboard the boat or bring them from home.  (No glass containers please!)

Is there lodging in the park?

Campsites are the only overnight accommodations within the park. Groups interested in hosting a conference or retreat at Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center can stay in a newly renovated hotel-style dormitory or in tents.

Are there bathrooms?

Passenger ferries running from Boston to Georges and Spectacle, and from Hingham to Georges are equipped with bathrooms. There are toilet facilities at each of the islands served by ferry or shuttle service (Georges, Spectacle, Grape, Bumpkin, Peddocks, Lovells, and Thompson Islands). Bathrooms are not available on Little Brewster Island or on the Inter-Island Shuttles.

Are there rain shelters on the islands?

Georges Island offers covered picnic areas and shelters within Fort Warren. There’s a Visitor’s Center on Spectacle along with a few shelters and a tent. Peddocks Island has inside space at the Visitor Center. Other islands have minimal, or in some cases, no structures with adequate rain protection, so be sure to check the weather, plan ahead and dress accordingly.

Are the Islands accessible to people with physical disabilities?

The main harbor island ferries offer handicap access, but the islands themselves do not. Georges Island offers paved and fairly level paths, and Spectacle Island has one accessible crushed stone trail. Although Peddocks Island has accessible paths along Fort Andrews, the smaller inter-island connectors may not have adequate access. Grape, Bumpkin, and Lovells Islands have trails of dirt or grass that may not be suitable for people with disabilities. Please call with specific questions.

Is fishing allowed?

Yes, but keep away from boaters and swimmers. If you are age 16 or over, you must have a MA, NH, RI, or CT fishing permit.

Is there food onboard the ferries?

Snacks such as hot pretzels, popcorn, chips, nutritional bars, fresh fruit, nuts and cereals are available, along with fruit juices, teas, sports drinks and other beverages.  On-island concessions are only available during peak season, June 21 - September 2 and on 5/18 and Memorial Day Weekend.  If you are traveling to the Islands during non-peak dates, you may want to purchase items onboard to bring with you on-Island or bring items from home.  No glass containers please and remember that trash from any item you brought on-Island with you must be carried off-Island with you as well.  Thanks for your cooperation!

Are there food concessions on the Islands?

Only during Peak Season - June 21st through September 2nd, as well as on Free Ferry Day - 5/18 and Memorial Day Weekend, Salty's concessions will be open on both Georges and Spectacle Islands.  Other times during the spring and fall, there will be no concessions on the Islands.  Concessions are available on the boats and can be brought onto the Islands or food and non-alcoholic beverages (in containers other than glass) can be brought from home.  Please remember to take all trash from items you brought on with you off the Island with you as well.  The Boston Harbor Islands are a carry in/carry out facility.

Are pets allowed on the Islands?

Service animals are the only pets permitted in the park.

Is bike riding permitted?

Unfortunately bike riding is not allowed on the islands.

Are there rules about trash disposal on the Islands?

As a rule of thumb, if you bring something to the island, you must also take it back with you. We ask for your help in keeping the Islands clean.

Is it OK to keep things I find on the Islands?

We ask that you respect the Park’s beauty and keep it intact by leaving any natural treasures – such as sea glass, shells and historic relics on the Islands.

What happens if I've reserved tickets but can't make it for the cruise?

Advance-order tickets are non-refundable. But, they may be transferred to another day and time depending on availability. Transfers cannot be handled online, only over the phone or in person at any BHC ticketing location.

Do you offer discounts for large groups?

We do have discounted group rates for parties of 25 or more. Please see our Group Tours page for more information.

Do you offer privately chartered vessels to the Boston Harbor Islands?

We do have yachts and passenger vessels available for private charters that can dock at the Boston Harbor Islands.  Please email our Sales Team for more information.
