Harbor Islands FAQs

What should I Know Before I Go for the 2020 season?

In response to COVID-19, your trip to The Boston Harbor Islands during the 2020 season may look and feel a bit different than usual.  Boston Harbor Now has developed a helpful resource outlining things to Know Before You Go to help you navigate and make the most out of your 2020 island adventure.  Be sure to take a look and be informed prior to your visit.

Hornblower Cruises and Events, which includes Boston Harbor Cruises, has updated its industry-defining SafeCruise by Hornblower program to deliver even higher standards of cleanliness onboard our vessels in the US, Canada and the UK.  The enhancements build on our already stringent cleaning processes and introduce increased safety measures to address and provide reassurance in the current environment.  LEARN MORE.

Do you recommend advance reservations?

We strongly recommend that you reserve your trip, especially on weekends and holidays. Trips often sell out.

How long is the ferry ride?

About 20 minutes to Spectacle Island.

What should I bring?

We recommend comfortable shoes or sneakers for walking. Also a light sweater or jacket in case the breeze picks up. Facial coverings are required for the 2020 season and sunscreen and sunglasses are a must.  And, with all the beautiful views, you won't want forget your camera or binoculars. During the 2020 season, food and beverage concession will not be available on the island.  So, if you will want food/beverages during your time on the Islands, you may bring them with you and remember to bring all used containers, wrappers and trash back with you when you leave the island.  You also can purchase a limited selection of beverages and packaged snacks onboard they ferry.  (No glass containers please!)

Is there lodging in the park?

Camping is not permitted on the Boston Harbor Islands for the 2020 season.

Are there bathrooms?

Passenger ferries running to Spectacle Island are equipped with bathrooms. There are toilet facilities available on Spectacle Island.

Are there rain shelters on the islands?

The Visitor’s Center on Spectacle is closed for the 2020 season.  Limited tented rain protection is available on island.  Be sure to check the weather, plan ahead and dress accordingly.

Are the Islands accessible to people with physical disabilities?

The main harbor island ferries offer handicap access, but the islands themselves do not. Georges Island offers paved and fairly level paths, and Spectacle Island has one accessible crushed stone trail. Although Peddocks Island has accessible paths along Fort Andrews, the smaller inter-island connectors may not have adequate access. Grape, Bumpkin, and Lovells Islands have trails of dirt or grass that may not be suitable for people with disabilities. Please call with specific questions.

Is fishing allowed?

Yes, but keep away from boaters and swimmers. If you are age 16 or over, you must have a MA, NH, RI, or CT fishing permit.

Is there food onboard the ferries?

A limited selection of prepackaged beverages and snack snacks will be available for purchase onboard for the 2020 season. On-island concession will not be operating for this season but you may bring food and drink (non-alcoholic) from home or purchase onboard and bring on-island with you.  No glass containers please and remember that trash from any item you brought on-Island with you must be carried off-Island with you as well.  Thanks for your cooperation!

Are pets allowed on the Islands?

Service animals are the only pets permitted in the park.

Is bike riding permitted?

Unfortunately bike riding is not allowed on the islands.

Are there rules about trash disposal on the Islands?

As a rule of thumb, if you bring something to the island, you must also take it back with you. We ask for your help in keeping the Islands clean.

Is it OK to keep things I find on the Islands?

We ask that you respect the Park’s beauty and keep it intact by leaving any natural treasures – such as sea glass, shells and historic relics on the Islands.

What happens if I've reserved tickets but can't make it for the cruise?

Advance-order tickets are non-refundable. But, they may be transferred to another day and time depending on availability. Transfers cannot be handled online, only over the phone or in person at any BHC ticketing location.

Are gift cards available?

Yes. You may purchase gift cards online, over the phone or in-person at our ticket booths. Or use the information on our contact page to call or email us and we'll get right back to you.
