Naturalists Notes 11-12-18

Happy Veteran’s Day to everyone, most especially our veterans and active military members!
The weather today was absolutely stunning with crystal clear skies, bright sunshine, and little wind leading allowing us to enjoy serene sea conditions. Lots and lots of birds held our attention for the ride out to the northwest corner where we found about seven humpbacks making random movements with fairly short dive times. We spent some time with one pair who allowed passengers to snap some beautiful photos in the afternoon sunlight before heading to the west to visit Infinity paired with another adult. In the distance we could see a lone humpback’s flipper towering above the water so we decided to investigate, however as is often the case, the whale halted the surface activity and embarked on a looooonnnng dive. Not a problem, we headed back to the other pair… except that they, too had changed up their behavior and resurfaced after about 15 minutes. Was the lone flipper slapper signaling that there were some fish to be found deep in the water column? One can only hypothesize, but we enjoyed the bit of time the pair spent at the surface taking “recovery breaths” and swimming up nice and close before we finally headed for home.
