Naturalists Notes 11-2-18
November 2, 2018
Today was gloomy and the seas were bumpy, but today’s whale watch passengers certainly didn’t mind as we had an amazing trip out on Stellwagen Bank! In total we observed approximately 20 humpback whales scattered throughout the area. One highlight of the trip was a handful of close approaches by a group of five humpback whales that included Bayou and Valley, who we recently observed farther north off of Jeffreys Ledge. Maybe they’re slowly starting their migration south! Other humpbacks observed today included Entropy, Bungee, and Chablis, along with numerous others that still need to be ID’ed. One of these unidentified whales treated us to intermittent flipper slaps and tail lobs, and we were also joined by a large pod of leaping Atlantic white sided dolphins and a few harbor porpoise!
