Do you recommend advance reservations?
We strongly recommend that you reserve your trip, especially on weekends and holidays. Trips often sell out.
What kind of ferry is it?
Salacia* is the largest and fastest passenger-only catamaran in the country. She’s filled with comfortable interior amenities and travels at up to 40 knots, getting you to and from Provincetown in only 90 minutes. She’s also equipped with a computerized ride stabilization system for the smoothest ride on water. *Please Note: On rare occasions, needed maintenance or other circumstances may necessitate that Salacia be substituted with another catamaran from BHC’s fleet, resulting in an increase in travel time. In addition, the 7AM trip from Provincetown to Boston ONLY is not scheduled on Salacia.
Can I bring luggage onboard?
We understand that, in addition to our day trippers, many passengers may be travelling for extended stays in Provincetown and therefore may have luggage. As a courtesy to our passengers, BHC currently allows luggage onboard free of charge. Luggage guidelines are as follows: Please be mindful that storage space is very limited. We ask that you keep to a maximum of one piece of luggage per person. Luggage or items over 45 linear inches (the total of the height, width, and depth of the bag)must be surrendered to the crew at the top of the gangway upon boarding and will remain in storage, without access, throughout the trip. With this in mind, please remove any items that you need while onboard – for example laptop, earphones, sunscreen – from your luggage before entering the gangway. Your compliance with these guidelines is greatly appreciated.
When should I arrive?
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your departure time to allow for boarding. The ferry departs on schedule and once it’s left the dock, you’ve missed the boat!
How long is the trip?
The P-Town Ferry, Salacia*, has an average trip time of 90 minutes underway from dock to dock. Additional time should be planned for disembarking and luggage retrieval. Certain circumstances such as extreme weather, mechanical issues, etc. may increase trip time. *If circumstances necessitate that Salacia be substituted with another catamaran from BHC’s fleet, an increase in travel time will result. In addition, the 7AM trip from Provincetown to Boston ONLY is not scheduled on Salacia.
How much time do I need to make an airport or other transportation connection?
Passengers are reminded that the 90-minute average trip time for the Provincetown Ferry represents the time underway from shore to shore. Time should also be allotted for disembarking and luggage retrieval. In addition, sea conditions, high passenger count, and circumstances once you arrive in Boston, such as traffic, etc. can all factor into your ability to make your connection. We strongly recommend that you leave ample time when booking your connection to allow for any variables that could occur. BHC offers convenient airport water taxi service at the dock in Boston upon arrival. You can arrange ticketing with our onboard Concierge during your time on the ferry.
Is there food on board?
The galley offers a terrific selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, tasty snacks such as hot pretzels, popcorn and chips, nutritional bars, fresh fruit, nuts and cereals. Fruit juices, tea, sports drinks and other beverages are also available along with beer, wine and cocktails. Please Note: at sea, credit/debit card transactions are sometimes not possible, so it’s a good idea to have cash on hand.
Can I use my credit card for onboard purchases such as snacks and drinks?
At sea, a lack of connectivity can sometimes make credit/debit card transactions impossible, thus requiring the galley to be “Cash Only”. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you have cash in hand if you plan to make onboard purchases.
Can you recommend things to do in Provincetown?
Absolutely. Just ask your onboard concierge for dining, entertainment and lodging recommendations. You’ll also find brochures and maps at the Concierge Desk to help you find your way.
Can I make a ticket reservation online?
Yes. Click here to reserve your tickets online. You’ll receive an e-ticket that can be presented at the boarding gate with no additional check in or confirmations required.
Are pets allowed on BHC boats?
BHC is pet-friendly and offers many cruises that do allow pets – with some restrictions and exclusions.
- Animals onboard must be kept with you and leashed or kept in a carrier at all times.
- For safety reasons, pets are not allowed on Codzilla.
- Service animals ONLY are permitted in the Boston Harbor Islands State and National Park.
- Pets onboard the Provincetown Ferry must be kept on the inside or outside of the Main Deck only. For the consideration of other passengers, please no pets on the upper deck.
PLEASE NOTE: Pet owners should be aware of the length of the cruise that they are embarking on (up to 4 hours for whale watches and 90 minutes for Provincetown Ferry) and consider if it is appropriate for the pet’s comfort and wellbeing.
What happens if I've reserved tickets but can't make it for the cruise?
Advance-order tickets are non-refundable. But, they may be transferred to another day and time depending on availability. Transfers cannot be handled online, only over the phone or in person at any BHC ticketing location.
Does my ticket ensure a seat onboard?
BHC strictly adheres to safety guidelines and vessel-specific capacity limits set by US Coast Guard certification. Capacity limits are set based on the number of individuals certified to be onboard for passage, rather than the number of seats on a vessel. Therefore, on trips experiencing high volume, the passenger count will exceed the number of seats onboard. Passengers are reminded that in order to maximize seating opportunities, belongings are not allowed on seats and booth seating should be shared with fellow passengers.

Do passengers ever experience motion sickness?
Our catamarans are designed to be highly stable, but some passengers may experience motion sickness. If you think this could be you, a medication such as Dramamine may help but you should take it at least an hour before boarding. Riding near the front of the boat and facing forward can help, as can ginger, crackers and keeping your head still by resting on a seat back.

Is the ferry ever cancelled due to weather?
With the safety and comfort of our passengers and crew always our top priority, ferry cancellation may be determined to be necessary in extreme weather/sea conditions. In the rare event of cancellation, BHC will provide motor coach transportation between Long Wharf, Boston and Macmillan Wharf, Provincetown (departing at the Ferry’s scheduled departure time) for passengers holding tickets. Refunds and exchanges will also be available. Cancellation alerts are posted on the homepage of BHC’s website.
